BUSINESS EDUCATION
Business Computer Information Systems I & II (1 Credit): This course is designed
to accomplish four learning objectives: (1) introduce business application software, (2) develop
skillful use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation graphics business
application software (3) facilitate proficiency at navigating a web browser, and (4) learn to
communicate through e-mail effectively and courteously. In addition, this course will include
an overview of computer hardware and software terminology, operating systems, career and job
opportunities which use computers, ethical and social responsibilities with the use of computer
software and hardware, and current methods of compiling, storing, and accessing data through the
software programs used in the course. Our current local area network uses Microsoft Office 97 Pro.
Web Mastering/HTML Programming (1/2 Credit per semester): This one to two semester
course is for students who have completed a full credit of Business Computer Information Systems.
It is designed for students who have an interest in computers and who want an entry-level
programming course with practical web-page design experience. The students will be directly
involved in updating the school website while designing their own site as well as learning
programming techniques using HTML, the programming language used for web-page design.
(Prerequisite: BCIS I and II)
Advanced Topics in Computer Science (1/2 credit): This course provides a forum for
those students who have achieved an advanced level of computer proficiency. The course may
address a variety of theoretical and/or technological issues related to computer science. Course
content will be determined by student(s) and instructor subsequent to acceptance of course content
proposals, which must be submitted for approval prior to term of registration. (Prerequisite: BCIS
I and II)
Journalism-Newspaper (1/2 or 1 credit): An elective course where students learn the
basic skills of news writing, editing, design and production while serving as the staff for the
school newspaper, The Laurel. Professionalism will be emphasized in meeting deadlines, reporting
fairly and accurately, and writing clear, concise news and feature stories. Enrollment is normally
restricted to Juniors and Seniors.
Journalism-Yearbook (1 credit): An elective course in which students are responsible
for the production of the school yearbook, The Crest. The staff will be trained in desktop
publishing, interviewing, feature writing, and digital photography. Enrollment is normally
restricted to Juniors and Seniors.
