Band Members Earn ATSSB Honors
San Marcos Academy Music Awards
Senior band member Matthew Novelli, who plays the string bass, was selected to 2016 All-State Band by the Association of Texas Small School Bands. He was chosen for this honor in competitive auditions held across the state at region and area levels. More than 9,000 students participated in the audition process and only 290 of those were selected for all-state honors.

Earlier in the year, several other SMA band students, along with Novelli, earned positions in the ATSSB Region 18/26 All-Region Band. Virginia Myers, Nathan Yu, Kyle McGraw, Harry Lee, Jasmine Xu, Hector Correa and Emily Shang (alternate) were all selected for this honor and performed with the All Region Band Jan. 22-23 at Texas State University.

SMA Band Director Randy Leifeste is a member of the ATSSB, a 1000-member group of band directors in class 1A, 2A and 3A high schools in Texas.

Welcome to the San Marcos Academy Music Department. The Music Department of SMA serves students in three curricular content areas: Band, Choral and Applied Music. All music classes are held during the school day as a part of a student’s regular daily schedule.

  • To teach an appreciation and understanding of the performing arts and how music influences and reflects history and culture.
  • To teach the importance of self-discipline, cooperation, loyalty and respect for others, as well as the importance of responsibility.
  • To create in students a desire and appreciation for excellence in performance of any endeavor.
  • To teach students how to set individual goals in life and how to accomplish those goals.
  • To teach students the skills and tools needed to perform to the best of their ability.

San Marcos Academy Music Photo #2 SMA High School Band:
Performs at all SMA Home football games, selected out of town games, all pep rallies, numerous concerts, programs and concert band festivals. All 8th-12th grade band students are enrolled in the SMA HS Band Class. Music includes SMA spirit songs, pop tunes, drum line cadences and patriotic tributes, with lots of fun in the stands. The pep band performs selected songs for halftime and will either play from the bleachers or on the track for the home crowd. All High School and 8th grade Band students participate in the Pep Band. The band roster presently includes students involved in football, volleyball, soccer, baseball, basketball, softball, tennis, track, JROTC, 4-H, swimming, cheerleading and many more! We as a faculty and staff work together to allow students to participate in numerous activities.

Band Students are encouraged to audition for the ATSSB (Texas Small School) All Region Bands, participate in either a Solo and/or Ensemble event and study privately with a specialist on their chosen instrument. Our goal is not to produce “professional musicians,” but to nurture an atmosphere of learning, self/group discipline and performance with fun.

San Marcos Academy Music Photo #3 SMA High School Beginner Band:
This band is for all students who are interested in learning a brass, woodwind or percussion instrument but have not previously had the opportunity to do so. Students who excel quickly can possibly be moved into the HS Band if their schedule allows.

SMA 7th Grade Beginner Band:
All 7th graders participate in band. Randy Leifeste (Fine Arts Director and Band Director) will evaluate each student and guide them to the band instrument best suited for them. Several concert events are provided each year along with the opportunity to perform at the Texas Lutheran University Band Festival. Students perform music that enriches the skills developed through class rehearsal and individual practice.

San Marcos Academy Music Photo #4 Instrument rental/purchase:
Instruments are available to rent from SMA depending on availability. Parents may also purchase an instrument for their student through numerous music stores in the Austin area or online sites such as The Woodwind and Brasswind Co. ( All beginner band students will be evaluated and guided to the instrument best suited for them individually. Contact Randy Leifeste for information on purchasing/renting a quality instrument.

SMA HS Choir:
The Academy Singers perform at numerous school occasions over the course of the year, including chapel services, San Marcos Academy Music Photo #5 Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, Spring Musical and also civic functions around the San Marcos area. Singers of all levels are encouraged to join. Students may also participate in TAPPS solo and ensemble competition and the TMEA Small School All State Choir auditions.

Applied Music:
Students wanting extra help on their instrument on a daily basis may enroll in the Applied Music class. All applied music students have the opportunity to study with a qualified private instructor or SMA faculty member on their instrument and must be enrolled in the Band or Choir class, with the exception of string, guitar and piano students. Opportunities for performances in a recital or concert setting happen throughout the school year.
